Etsy's Bonnie Lease & Her Shop!

Hello all!

So, here is the thing.... I love Etsy! I think you all knew that, but I just wanted to say it again! I truly think that Etsy provides an outstanding display of goodies that you just can't find anywhere else! Just nod your head.. you know it is true. Also, I think there are a lot of shop owners over the age of 45 on Etsy. Hmmmmmm, I wonder why?

For a few posts or more....
I want to feature Shops that have Over 45 owners.
Why you ask??? Well, Why Not!
(Plus, I am over 45 and I need the company!)

Our Shop Owner of the Day! Drum roll please.....

 Bonnie Lease.

The owner of Fiber and Bead Boutique!

Were you over the age of 45 when you started your shop?

I was well over 45 when I started the shop.

How do you think your age has helped you in your business?

Has my age helped with this adventure? Maybe. Certainly the years I spent teaching beginning computers and beginning internet have helped. Also being retired gives me the time that is needed to devote to the shop

What do you sell?

Fiber and Bead Boutique is a 3 generation shop. My husband Fred and I make the fiber accessories. Fred weaves beautiful scarves, shawls, tea towels and other items on an 8 harness loom. I weave scarves, belts, bookmarks and other items on Inkle looms and a rigid heddle loom. I also crochet, knit, spin and felt. Handspun yarns and felted items haven't yet made it to the shop, but some of the finished items are from my handspun yarns. My daughter Jen and my granddaughter Emma design and make beaded jewelry. Jen also makes her polymer clay beads. She will soon be adding fused glass to the mix.

How did you get started with Etsy?

We started on Etsy last November because we were looking for another venue from which to sell. We have a friend who had started a shop and was happy with it. I do the work on the shop.

When did you get interested in making your Art/Craft?

I have been a fiber junkie for as long as I can remember. I've been spinning for about 15 years. I took a beginning weaving class about 12 years ago, or so. I bought a Baby Wolf loom. Once I was on my own, the Wolf, that was much bigger than the loom I learned on overwhelmed me. Fred was tired of seeing it sit there unused because I was afraid of it. He offered to help me, and the rest is history. It is now his loom and he weaves amazing things. Although Jen grew up with the fiber and can crochet, knit and sew the art material that drew her were beads. She is self-taught and loves to work with beads. Emma has learned at her mother's knee. She is also learning to weave, but has nothing woven on the shop yet.

Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration comes from the fiber. I love the fiber before it is spun. I have some that may never be spun just so I can pet it sometimes. I love yarn and I love color. The fiber tells me what it wants to be. Fred is drawn to color, pattern, and texture, so I guess you can say that weave structure inspires him. Jen and Emma love color. Emma is drawn to stones.

Who taught you or how did you learn your art form?

My grandmother starting teaching me to crochet and to sew about, heaven help me, 60 years ago. Friends taught me to knit and one in particular is my knitting mentor. Workshops through our local yarn shop and weaving and spinning guild offer classes and workshops that I take advantage of. Anything else, comes from books. I am a retired librarian. Fred is self-taught. Jen has taken a few workshops and is teaching Emma.

Where do you see your Shop in 5 years from now?

I don't know where the shop will be in 5 years. I hope it will grow and be successful. By then I may turn over the management of it to Jen or to Emma.

How do you manage your time between Etsy and the rest of your life?

Time management, now there's a concept. I spend probably too much time on the computer, tweaking the shop, on the teams, and on Facebook groups. I don't go anywhere without a tote bag containing a project, and am generally working on something if I am sitting in conversation or watching TV. Since I am retired, I just juggle whatever has to be done.

How did you come up with the name of your shop?

We tossed around a lot of names. We wanted the shop name to represent what we make, at the same time keeping it general enough that we could expand or revise our products.

Do you make or stock items you love, or what will sell?

Mostly we make what we love. There have been a few things that came from specific requests or custom orders. But if I didn't love it, I wouldn't make it.

Where else can we find you online?

I'm on Facebook and Pinterest.
                               www.pinterest.com/bonniecrochets/fiber-and-bead-boutique/

Did you always want to have your own business?

I want to continue to create. I can only give so much away, so yes, to continue to create, I must have a venue for it.

Any other thoughts you want to share with us?

Other words, let me see. I've met some fun new friends while on Etsy. The community support whether it is on Etsy teams or Facebook groups is wonderful. The view of handicrafts has changed. Years ago Jen and I tried to sell our crocheted and hand sewn stuffed animals at craft shows. The response was underwhelming to say the least. People weren't willing to spend a reasonable amount on such things. That was one reason we decided to try the online route. Now, people go out to craft shows and they appreciate the fiber arts. It is a wonderful change.

I want to thank Bonnie for sharing her shop with us!

Come to think of it, here is the thing about Etsy... people don't really share their shops... they share their Passion! They don't just sell stuff.. they sell a bit of their time, love, and creative mind. Yep, can't get that anywhere else!

You haven't heard from me in awhile. However, I have the cutest little excuse! It is about 7 pounds...I now have a Grandson! I have been a bit busy! But, I am back!

Get your coffee... here we go!

What do you sell?

Custom Titanium Rings

How did you get started with Etsy?

We were selling on Ebay and a client referred us to Etsy.

When did you get interested in making your Art/Craft?

In 1997, I was working in a machine shop and made a titanium ring out of a key chain. My friends saw it and started ordering them. I asked my boss if I could stay late and use the machine and eventually made enough money to buy a machine of my own.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Nature and the Hawaiian Island scenery

Who taught you or how did you learn your art form?

I was self taught and have pioneered the embedded titanium ring industry.

Where do you see your Shop in 5 years from now?

I plan on continuing to expand and pioneer new avenues in the titanium ring industry. I am on the verge of launching a new business that may be revolutionary.

How do you manage your time between Etsy and the rest of your life?

I have an amazing wife and a team of family and friends that work with me; they help juggle my schedule and make executing my ambitions possible.

How did you come up with the name of your shop?

We are located on the Big Island of Hawaii and inspired by its culture and scenery.

Do you make or stock items you love, or what will sell?

We have two Hawaii Titanium Rings galleries here on the Big Island and several galleries that carry our rings on the mainland. We specialize in custom rings made to order so our stock is mainly for examples.

Where else can we find you online?

We have a website with all of our new styles at: www.hawaiititaniumrings.com

Did you always want to have your own business?

Yes!

Any other thoughts you want to share with us?

Thank you to you and to all of our supporters, we are so thankful for people who buy handmade items from family businesses! The corporate competition has taken our creations and mass-produced them by out-sourcing which has hurt our growth. We have survived because we keep improving every day with new techniques and designs that set our quality high above the imitations.

Mahalo nui loa from our Ohana to yours!

About

(taken from Hawaii Titanium Rings About Page on Etsy)

Hawaiian Titanium Rings has been pioneering the titanium ring industry since the beginning in the mid 1990's. A small family ran company specializing in high craftsmanship and great customer service. As titanium bands grew in popularity so did the competition. Many of our styles were immediately duplicated. As we continued to cater to our customers we thought of ways to change the look of the now common titanium ring. Living in Hawaii the idea of inlaying local exotic hardwoods came about, and after many years of research the new look was created. Maintaining the durability of the titanium ring while inlaying the hard to find rare exotic hard woods from around the world. once we figured out the techniques needed to protect the wood, the new designs were endless. Now taking the most durable wedding band available and adding the natural art of Mother Nature we brought to you the Exotic Hardwood Series and our Tribal Series. The new look was a Big Hit! As people raved about Mother Nature's beauty in the different grain patterns and coloration of our hardwoods, we continued to look for more natural art our earth had to offer. We have now found ways to bring you to the many variety of precious stone and minerals. Taking the deep blues of Lapis and adding the bright green of Malachite we began to see that mixing our imagination with Mother Nature's beauty would soon change the way people look at the Titanium Ring. And now 15 years later Hawaiian Titanium Rings continues to hand make each band custom to your order while giving you hundreds of styles to choose from, with thousands of possibilities. You can now find our rings at exclusive fine art galleries and high end jewelry stores around the world.

You can find Jerry and his brothers on the beautiful Kona coast in Kailua-Kona Hawaii

Get ready to meet
Olivia Hook
Her Etsy Shop:
MendingLifeTogether

Get settled people! Here we go!!

What do you sell?

Baby and Toddler items, along with purses/diaper bags for mom

How did you get started with Etsy?

When I was thirteen and making items here and there for family and friends, I wanted more people to find my things. That's when my dad found Etsy.

When did you get interested in making your Art/Craft?

When I started sewing lessons when I was about 12 or 13. I started making things for myself and then I started making things for my cousins.

Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration comes from bright, colorful and playful items. Also what's new and trending for kids. My inspiration also comes from the little girl/child inside of me.

Who taught you or how did you learn your art form?

My sewing teacher at a local fabric store, my mom also helps me when there's patterns that are hard to understand.

Where do you see your Shop in 5 years from now?

I hope to see my store growing and improving and meeting new people/customers along the way. I hope that my store could be a part-time job, considering in 5 years I most likely will be in College. I would love for my store in 5 years to be online and have it's very own store, but for it to be big online is my main goal.

How do you manage your time between Etsy and the rest of your life?

I feel like my life revolves around Etsy. I will spend time during school planning items to make, things to do, and how I'm planning on promoting items.

Is this a hobby, part-time job, or full-time job?

My store first started off as a hobby now it's becoming more of a job and I hope for it to become part-time job in the near future.

Do you make or stock items you love, or what will sell?

I stock items that I love and that will sell. My two biggest selling items are Critter Blankets and Crayon Rolls.

Where else can we find you online?

Did you always want to have your own business?

Being so young I never really thought about owning my own business but now it takes a big part in my life.

Mya's Heart

Happy Hello!
I am doing something different today. I was approached by an Etsy Teammate, Deb Lonergan , for help. She asked if I would do a blog post to help her niece and other children like her niece. Please take time to read this post.

This post will touch your soul.
It is the story of a little girl.
This is Mya's Story.
(Told by Deb Longergan)

This is the story of Mya’s  heart.
Mya is the little girl on the billboard

When sweet Mya was 15 months old, it was discovered that she had a bad heart, and would probably need a transplant in a few years.  Fast forward about a year: it became clear that Mya would need a transplant much sooner than anticipated.  In fact, as soon as one became available.
Mya spent the next 6 months at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta .  She celebrated her third birthday there.  Mya became the darling of the entire hospital staff because of her outgoing nature, intelligence and boundless energy….she would ride her tricycle up and down the halls (with her adult caregivers trotting behind, trying to keep up, and carrying her IV bags!)
Mya on her trike and showing off her IV lines

She would tell people that her heart was broken and she was waiting for a new one to come in the mail.

A few months ago, the mail finally delivered a heart for Mya.  The surgery took hours and hours, but Mya came through like a trooper!
Mya in recovery

I’m happy to report that Mya is doing fabulously well.  There has been no rejection at all.  She is growing fast (making up for lost time) and still has that boundless energy. She just learned how to do the “starfish” in the pool……and can swim all the way to the other side!
But the story does not end there.  About 1 in 4 heart transplant recipients will need a new transplant within about 5 years.  This is an agonizing reality for anyone who has received a heart, and for their family and friends.  And the survival rate for repeat recipients is less than 60%

Can you imagine being a parent and knowing you might have to go through the trauma again?  Possibly lose your child after all?  Or being a recipient, and unsure what the future will bring?

Mya’s parents have started a foundation, the Enduring Hearts Foundation, to fund research to find out why so many heart transplants fail after a few years, and to find a solution.  The Enduring Hearts Foundation is a non-profit organization that awards operating grants for research projects in organ transplantation to established members of academic staff at universities, transplant centers and research institutions.

Help us spread the word about this foundation by sharing this blog and asking others to do the same.  Contributions are necessary and welcome.

Another way you can help!

Deb Lonergan has a new jewelry collection in her Etsy shop. The Collection is "Enduring Hearts Collection".

"Profits from the sale of these items will be donated to the Enduring Hearts Foundation. I have featured Swarovski crystal hearts in this collection because to me they appear fragile and easily broken, but have a true strength and beauty to them.  I thought it appropriate that the jewelry should feature these crystal hearts, as they exemplify the hearts of these transplant patients."

Introducing the "Enduring Hearts Collection". Proceeds (less only the cost of materials) from the sales of items in this collection will be donated to the Enduring Hearts Foundation, a non-profit organization that awards operating grants for research projects in organ transplantation to established members of academic staff at universities, transplant centers and research institutes.

My thoughts,

Giving the gift of Love is magical.

                             Each life is a gift...
                                                  A hope...
                                                       A light...
                                              Endless possibilities...

Be an organ donor

I know this is hard, but, remember.. in your darkest moments (loss of your child) you can provide light

Thank you all for taking the time to read this very important post!! Let's get the word out folks!!!
