All about Mom!

Good morning!

Today is going to be all about Mom! You have one and you just might be one. Moms are everywhere.... You can't go anywhere without bumping into one. Today, is my daughter birthday. She is 29! Holy Smokes... it sure went by fast! Anyway, it got me thinking....

The Mom on a good day:
She smiles at you. She asks nicely that you put away your stuff. She might even start the sentence off with the word "honey'. She goes and puts your undies in the laundry and finds matches to all your socks and sticks them in your dresser. She comes back to notice that her "honey" hasn't moved off the couch yet. So, she asks again. This time she might smile and say " Hey, sweetheart don't forget to clean up your stuff". She goes and makes "sweetheart" lunch and sets it on the table. Now, "sweetheart" is called for lunch and "sweetheart" doesn't move an inch. So, "sweetheart" hasn't put away the stuff and is taking forever to come to the table. Now, MOM is starting to twitch and steam is coming out her ears and she still has the battle of getting sweet pie to do homework later!

Let us take a minute here and think. Hmmm.... if you are the kid. You have put your mom through Hell (pick any day kids and think about... you know I am right) and she deserves a gift on Mother's Day. If you are the Mom, you deserve a gift on Mother's Day for not killing your child on any given day over the years! Moms.. you know I am right on this one.. stop day dreaming about what you thought motherhood was going to be like and get real!

Well, guess what! I have some Outstanding Stuff you can get for Mom! And, Mom if you think you need to buy yourself a little something (cuz, dad forgot to tell self absorbed "sweetheart" to get you something) I have the perfect something just for you! (slip it into dad's hand and tell him to give it to the kid to give to you... oh, you might want to wrap it yourself for a good presentation!)

Where can you find said Outstanding Stuff... let me tell ya! Head over to my shops on Etsy!

Featured Shop Hawaii Titanium Rings

You haven't heard from me in awhile. However, I have the cutest little excuse! It is about 7 pounds...I now have a Grandson! I have been a bit busy! But, I am back!

I have a stunning shop for you today. If you are a ring person, this shop will blow your socks off!

Featured Shop
Hawaii Titanium Rings

Shop Owner
Jerry Guire

Get your coffee... here we go!

What do you sell?

Custom Titanium Rings

How did you get started with Etsy?

We were selling on Ebay and a client referred us to Etsy.

When did you get interested in making your Art/Craft?

In 1997, I was working in a machine shop and made a titanium ring out of a key chain. My friends saw it and started ordering them. I asked my boss if I could stay late and use the machine and eventually made enough money to buy a machine of my own.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Nature and the Hawaiian Island scenery

Who taught you or how did you learn your art form?

I was self taught and have pioneered the embedded titanium ring industry.

Where do you see your Shop in 5 years from now?

I plan on continuing to expand and pioneer new avenues in the titanium ring industry. I am on the verge of launching a new business that may be revolutionary.

How do you manage your time between Etsy and the rest of your life?

I have an amazing wife and a team of family and friends that work with me; they help juggle my schedule and make executing my ambitions possible.

How did you come up with the name of your shop?

We are located on the Big Island of Hawaii and inspired by its culture and scenery.

Do you make or stock items you love, or what will sell?

We have two Hawaii Titanium Rings galleries here on the Big Island and several galleries that carry our rings on the mainland. We specialize in custom rings made to order so our stock is mainly for examples.

Where else can we find you online?

We have a website with all of our new styles at: www.hawaiititaniumrings.com

Did you always want to have your own business?

Yes!

Any other thoughts you want to share with us?

Thank you to you and to all of our supporters, we are so thankful for people who buy handmade items from family businesses! The corporate competition has taken our creations and mass-produced them by out-sourcing which has hurt our growth. We have survived because we keep improving every day with new techniques and designs that set our quality high above the imitations.

Mahalo nui loa from our Ohana to yours!

About

(taken from Hawaii Titanium Rings About Page on Etsy)

Hawaiian Titanium Rings has been pioneering the titanium ring industry since the beginning in the mid 1990's. A small family ran company specializing in high craftsmanship and great customer service. As titanium bands grew in popularity so did the competition. Many of our styles were immediately duplicated. As we continued to cater to our customers we thought of ways to change the look of the now common titanium ring. Living in Hawaii the idea of inlaying local exotic hardwoods came about, and after many years of research the new look was created. Maintaining the durability of the titanium ring while inlaying the hard to find rare exotic hard woods from around the world. once we figured out the techniques needed to protect the wood, the new designs were endless. Now taking the most durable wedding band available and adding the natural art of Mother Nature we brought to you the Exotic Hardwood Series and our Tribal Series. The new look was a Big Hit! As people raved about Mother Nature's beauty in the different grain patterns and coloration of our hardwoods, we continued to look for more natural art our earth had to offer. We have now found ways to bring you to the many variety of precious stone and minerals. Taking the deep blues of Lapis and adding the bright green of Malachite we began to see that mixing our imagination with Mother Nature's beauty would soon change the way people look at the Titanium Ring. And now 15 years later Hawaiian Titanium Rings continues to hand make each band custom to your order while giving you hundreds of styles to choose from, with thousands of possibilities. You can now find our rings at exclusive fine art galleries and high end jewelry stores around the world.

You can find Jerry and his brothers on the beautiful Kona coast in Kailua-Kona Hawaii

Featured Artist Merissa Geldner

Happy morning everyone!

It is a beautiful day in Eastern Oregon! I have my coffee and I am settled in! Time to share a New Shop with you!

Today I am featuring Merissa Geldner

Her shop is
GlassbyGeldner

When I saw her wine holder... I almost feel over! So, beautiful! Wow!

Ok... here we go. Get ready! Get comfy!

Tell us what you have in your shop

I sell stained glass art that have mostly nature themes. I employ the Tiffany method which involves putting glass together by copper foil tape and solder and by leaded method which involves came. Tiffany is appropriate for art that is hung indoors hung on chains in a window or hinged to windows and doors as shutters. Leaded glass is what is used for art that goes in a door or window that faces the rain and snow. Same can also be used indoors. I am currently working on 2 windows. I try to do a project weekly, but the windows take longer for me to do.

How did you get started with Etsy?

I was showing my art to a lady that runs an art gallery in Wynona Lake, Indiana. Her daughter was there and mentioned Etsy.

When did you get interested in making your Art

I was probably about 12 years old. My mom took lessons and I joined in. Life got busy and I had put off my craft. Later after college I restarted my interest. I had a front door with a long window in it. I made a Tiffany door window. I would put brackets on my front door and slide the window in. The window could be replaced with a different scene simply by sliding them out of the brackets and replacing it with a new one. I still have it 12 years later. I also had a nonfunctional fireplace. I made a “screen” for that and hung a light in the fireplace from the chimney vents.

Where does your inspiration come from?

I love art. I love color. I am a Christian and have a strong belief that all that we see around us is too orderly and too arranged for it to be a product of mere chance. As an artist myself, I marvel at the beauty I see that I can only mimic in what I make. I have a birding area outside my house which sits on a river. My parents live in the Brownsville-McAllen area in Texas and we visit wildlife preserves with a camera and I take pictures of the birds and flowers I see. This is what I use in my patterns.

Who taught you or how did you learn your art form?

Art runs in the family. My mom is very good with oils and watercolor. She also has some very nice quilts. She has a website called Patsy Thurn Fine Art. I can’t remember who taught me my craft has it was years ago, but Kokomo Opalescent Glass has been very helpful in refining my work and teaching me other forms of glass art. One such form is shadow art. This involves putting my art on Copper foil tape and using solder and patina (coloring for the solder) to make a picture on glass. For examples of these see my glass dalles (Coy Fish and Gone Fishing). I used shadow art to make the mask on the Green Jay suncatcher and to make the veins on the Monarch Butterfly suncatcher. You can hang these according to your preference, defined lives versus shadow.

Where do you see your Shop in 5 years from now?

I want my name to be associated with stained glass. I want people to hear or see Merissa Geldner or GlassbyGeldner and think quality glass art. As I do have a full time job and I am active in the Christian ministry, I see my shop growing slowly. I enjoy what I do and want others to enjoy what I make.

How do you manage your time between Etsy and the rest of your life?

I typically work evenings. I go out in the ministry offering bible studies Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays in the mornings. So I have to be very organized. I do some promoting in the morning and on my lunch break at work in the evenings. On the days I do not go out in the ministry I work on a stained glass project. That is why windows take so long to do. I can do a suncatcher fairly quickly – they are small. Windows are more time consuming. So if I haven’t posted anything for some weeks, it is like because I am working on something bigger, or taking classes so I can offer something else. I have a wonderful husband that is very supportive. That is a big help.

Is this a hobby, part-time job, or full-time job?

At this point it is a jobby. It is a job in that I am committed to continue and keep posting. I also have an outlet I send work to locally. It is a hobby in that I enjoy what I do and as I am new to this venue, I do not yet make enough to quit my day job. Of course if you are doing what you love to do, it is not really a job is it?

Where else can we find you online?

www.facebook.com/glass.bygeldner
I often preview upcoming projects on my facebook. I encourage people to follow me or friend me. I also have posts that show how my work is done. You can view one titled “How I Do It.” posted just this year.

Did you always want to have your own business?

I have had my own business before. I was a landlord until I got married. As I was moving out of state, I had to sell them. Out of state landlording doesn’t work really great.

Any other thoughts you want to share with us?

I have been asked if I do custom work. I typically do that for the locals in my area as showing and matching glass is easier in person. I do, however, look for ideas as to what my market wants. So any ideas as to what anyone would like to see is appreciated. I recently had requests for butterfly windows. I have some ideas floating around for that. Also I have a cardinal window that I am getting ready to start. Click onto my facebook link and friend me, all are welcome.

More about Merissa

I learned about stained glass as a child. I took classes with my mom. About 16 years ago I picked it up again. I would make "shutters" for my windows. These shutters were stained glass windows that were framed and hinged to the woodwork around the window. They could open so that I could still open my windows and let the spring air come in.

People who saw my work often wondered why I was not selling it. My marriage took me from Cincinnati where I was raised to Indiana. I refined my skills taking classes at Kokomo Opalescent Glass which sells stained glass by sheets and supplies and also takes in clients such as Disney.

I came up with the wine bottle holders. After googling them and not finding anything like the ones I designed, I knew I had something unique to offer. A curator, Merna Eisenbraun, at the Canal Street Gallery in Winona Lake, IN saw my wine holder and her daughter told me about ETSY.

So here I am. I do work full-time at a hospital and also engage in the Christian ministry, so stocking my shop is slow. I try to do something every week. I have plans for fire place screens, suncatchers, windows and wine bottle holders. Also these designs are my own. I draw much inspiration from nature. You will notice a lot of themes with birds or fish or other nature-type subjects.

I do not do custom orders as it is difficult to match the exact glass people want over the internet. However, I do like to hear from admirers as to what they might like to see and what colors they especially favor. This helps me to get in touch with the market. So hit that "Contact" button and leave me your 2 cents. One person emailed me about the coy fish dalle telling me about a memory it evoked in her. Love the stories. Let me hear from you.

Thank you Merissa for sharing with us!!!

Featured Shop Owner Nan Curtis

Today you are in for a treat! All Handcrafted Items!
Today's Featured Shop Owner is Nan Curtis!
She is the Owner of  Bynani.
Sit back and relax! I know you will find something to love in Nan's shop! She makes everything by hand and her items are truly made with love and care.
Let's learn a bit about Nan!
What do you sell?
I sell a variety of sewn items:  women’s and girl’s apparel and accessories; purses/handbags/totes/lunchbags; home décor; “kid stuff,” and toddler/baby clothing and accessories.

How did you get started with Etsy?

I started with Etsy a few years ago when my house began to bulge from all of the things I was making.  I was practically giving things away to strangers and a few of my friends told me I should sell on Etsy.  I started a shop there, but had to take a break because of an illness.  I started my new shop in October.
When did you get interested in making your Art/Craft?
I’ve always “made stuff” (my mother said to me the other day, “is there any craft you don’t do?”) My great-grandmother was an artist and I remember saying when I was young, “I’m going to be an artist and live in Paris!”  That led me to fine art BA in photography and an MA in Art History and I ended up working through the ranks of art museums to become a museum director.  Over that whole period, and throughout all of my life and academic studies, I always sewed.
Who taught you or how did you learn your art form?
My mother sews, her sister sews, their mother sewed, her mother sewed, and I absorbed all of the lessons anyone would give me.  I began making Holly Hobby (does anyone remember Holly Hobby?) doll clothes when I was 7.  My mother gave me her sewing machine when I moved out of the house (that machine was older than me!) and then gave me another a few years after that when she bought another newer model for herself.  I was able to have that one replaced when my mom came to visit.  We were going to sew together on my machine (which had been her machine earlier).  She took about 10 stitches and said, “how can you sew on this!  I’m buying you a new machine today!”  Shout out to Mom!  THANK YOU!!
Where does your inspiration come from?

I’m inspired by so many things.  Art and design history, nature, architecture and whimsy.  I don’t have any children, so sewing whimsical things for kids is a way for me to get my “baby fix” and it fulfills the child in me.  Architecture fuels my eye for geometric forms and contrasts in color and texture.  As an art historian, I’m constantly thinking of forms that are historical.  And, I’ve always been a “nature girl.”  I live on a large tract of land and am always watching and walking outside.  Birds, animals, plant life, texture, color all make an impact on me.  The combination of all these forms of inspiration goes into my head, mixes around with the other stuff in my subconscious, and then comes out as a design and a sewn good.  I’m thankful for this diversity in inspiration.  It allows me to constantly change up what I’m doing and allows me to make a variety of items.  Hopefully, something for everyone.
Where do you see your Shop in 5 years from now?
My vision for the future of my shop is a really good question, because as a super smart business woman I . . . . have not made a business plan!  That’s exactly the way to conquer the world and be proprietor of Nanny-poo’s Princess Bynani Empire!  Haarrrr!  OK, in all seriousness, there is a Sunday Artisans Market in Ann Arbor, Michigan, about 15 miles from my home.  I would like to have a regular stall there, and perhaps do medium- sized craft/art fairs (the larger craft fairs seem to me to attract craftspeople that crank out the same version of a product over and over and over, I’m not interested in that), and to build business on my website.  I also like being on Etsy teams and sometimes fantasize about what it would be like to work for Etsy and coordinate/teach labs and events.
How do you manage your time between Etsy and the rest of your life?
Right now I’m taking a break from my career and am pursuing an MBA.  Why?  Why not!  Actually, I hope the MBA will give me the business skills I need to run my own business.   I am also trying to start a professional organizer business (that’s where the experience of running a museum and having been a  collections manager come in, as well as my experience organizing fabric and my studio!).  So, right now, work is not a conflict for me.  Studying, on the other hand . . . well, it sure does get in the way of my sewing!  Work will become an issue soon, though.  I need to find a part-time job to keep the school gig (oh, yeah, and the eating/being warm/having gasoline gig) going.
Is this a hobby, part-time job, or full-time job?
Right now the Bynani is a hobby,  a major hobby, that I am attempting to turn into a part-time job.  I really want to reach a point where I can outsource photographing my products.  It takes up so much time.  I hope I can find someone that is skilled enough to photograph well and who will also barter with me.
Do you make or stock items you love, or what will sell?
I only make things that I love.  I believe that if you make something that you wouldn’t use/wear/own then you won’t make a quality, or desired, good.  I recently moved back to Michigan after having been in Texas for four years.  Texas is where I started the previous Etsy shop (Green Onions Textiles).  Because of moving expenses I had to purge most of my items.  It made me really anxious!  Everything I make is like a baby to me.  I ended up giving everything to my next door neighbors.  They had been so patient with me while I lived there.  Almost every night I would run over to their house with the latest “show and tell,” and they would always oooh and aaah over everything.  I knew that they would find good homes for my creations.
Where else can we find you online?
In addition to the Bynani Etsy shop, I also have a website.  You can visit me and shop there at www.bynani.com.  I write a blog there and post about every four days.  My blog posts are very diverse and range from tutorials, art history, and thoughts of the day.  And I am always open to suggestions for blog post topics.  Please stop in and leave a comment.

I also have many Pinterest boards at http://pinterest.com/nanibynani/ and a Facebook business page at https://www.facebook.com/nanibynani.  I use the Facebook Page a lot to announce new items and sales.  Please stop by there and give me a Like if you . . . should I say it? . . . If you like!
Did you always want to have your own business?
I have always wanted to run my own business.  My mother started her own business when I was a baby.  She typed dissertations (yep, typed, that’s the way it was waaaay back then, typewriter times!), then turned that into a very prosperous typesetting business.  Mom is my greatest source of encouragement and hope, and is the best role model I know.  She’s my greatest cheerleader and has taught me the ins and outs of starting up a business and . . . sigh . . . patience.
Any other thoughts you want to share with us?

I have two final thoughts.

First, buy artisan.  It’s worth it for you, for the economy and for artists.   As major big-block stores keep growing and growing, they are driving out business for Mom and Pop stores and reducing the American GNP.  That’s an economic point of view that is indeed very important.  But there’s an additional reasons to buy handcrafted.  When you buy an artisan product you are buying something made just for you.  It’s unique, it’s a work of art and craft, and you are ultimately supporting the arts, which is so important for human beings.   You deserve to have some art in your life! And, you can be sure that you’ll never be wearing the same scarf/handbag/dress/etc., as anyone else at work or play.
Second, I want to say that everyone has creativity inside of themselves.  It’s true that some people are more talented, and perhaps skilled, than others.  But everyone has a creative element; it’s simply a matter of being still, looking inside oneself, and letting it out.  Throughout my career(s) as an artist, art history instructor, and museum professional I have heard so many times, “I’m not creative, I could never . . . . “ But the truth is that as human beings we are inherently creative.  So, give it a try!  See what happens (by the way, that’s what my grandfather always said).
Best wishes to all and come take a look at Bynani!
 Nan
Thank you Nan for being my guest today!
